Perfect powder for skiing and fitting vinyl?
With most installations a covering of snow and sub-zero temperatures usually provides a stumbling block for fitting vinyl. When The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead wanted to update their wall graphics this was just the set of conditions that The Image Group faced.
Having installed the original graphics back in 2009 before The Snow Centre was operational, The Image Group had an idea of the challenges they faced when it came to replacing the old vinyl. This time though they had to install the graphics on the slope during the busy summer holidays and at sub-zero temperatures.
This presented account manager Mike Holmes with some difficult challenges in the planning stages of the project.
For Image Group, account manager Mike Holmes said:
"From the outset this was always going to be a challenging project due to the unique set of circumstances we faced on site. Our first concern when we looked at the conditions in the snow centre were the properties of the vinyl and how it would adhere when it was applied at sub-zero temperatures. With over 3500m2 of print needed to cover the walls we had to be confident in the material and with help from our supplier we managed to find a vinyl that was up to the task and would adhere at 0°C.
Once the substrate was sourced we had to work out the logistics of fitting in fresh snow, on an incline and with the public enjoying the slope at the same time. Working closely with the centre managers and staff we looked at a working schedule to suit busy periods of use, lift closures, special events and most importantly the daily maintenance of the snow for skiers. After several days on site and with the fitters getting used to the cold, we started to make steady progress and the mountain scene began to form and momentum grew.
Each elevation of the centre posed different problems, whether it was ice under the existing vinyl or difficult access through and over the ski lift cables, but the team did a phenomenal job all round. Formed composite coving and panels produced the perfect finish to the bottom of the walls and bespoke shatterproof covers now protect the panel joins in the lower level of the building from wayward ski poles. The whole experience was fantastic, from the staff at the ski centre right through to all the hard work the fitters put in on site. We all gained a tremendous amount of new and invaluable knowledge on this project and it was a pleasure to work on!"
