Shop signage: Out with the old and in with the new for 2020

People can have serious attachments to their shop signage.

For instance, at the end of 2019, America’s NBC wrote a memorial post to a sign based at Tenderloin’s Kahn and Keville automotive body and tire shop.

This wasn’t any old piece of shop signage, though. The street sign had been visible to the public since 1956 and was famous for showcasing poems, quotes, messages and much more besides. It was instantly associated with Kahn and Keville, which is closing its doors after more than a century in business.

Other blogs and outlets around the area have expressed their condolences, and it’s a great example of how, with the right creative approach, even your shop signage can reach out to potential customers and passers-by in ways you may never have thought of before.

We think that, with a brand new decade, 2020 is the perfect time for shops and brands of all shapes and sizes to give their front of house a refresh and make themselves known to the wider public with creative shop signage that simply can’t be ignored.

And we don’t mean by having an enormous ‘50s-style diner sign like the one on display in San Francisco (though there’s nothing stopping you getting one if that’s your fancy!).

Great shop signs can attract footfall in all sorts of unique, colourful and attractive ways, whether it’s the sort of materials you use, the way they illuminate in the night, the message they carry and much more besides.

Pan and tray signs are a brilliant example, for instance. Raised, these 3D signs stand out against the competition, look sleek and contemporary, and are hard to ignore. With the right approach, too, they can weatherproofed so they always look in pristine condition.

Wayfinding and directional signage are perfect for larger brands and public service providers such as hospitals, and help people find their way around the site easily.

You don’t necessarily need a physical sign to catch attention too; etched and frosted vinyl signage look amazing on a shop front, and can encourage people to find out more about who you are and what you do.

Digital signage as well can help to convey information and creative content such as offers and calls to action to shoppers, too. Whatever you want to use your shop signage for, we think that 2020 is the perfect time to invest in it for the decade ahead.
